At the tender age of 19 James made a journey to the Australian Country Music heartland of Tamworth and had a chance meeting with country music legend Bill Chambers. Through sharing a stories and laughs with Bill they found they were kindred spirits. James found a mentor in bill and although at first glance they may seem from different planets their worlds had collided. Bill recognised talent and set about developing James’ songwriting craftsmanship, bill also fine tuned James remarkable yet raw style of guitar playing.
James gravitated towards the new sounds of The Alt Americana stylings of Justin Townes Earle and former Drive By Trucker Jason Isbell. The seemingly incomprehensible event of James and Bill meeting lead to the two collaborating on James’ debut solo EP, with Bill producing and playing on James’ 6 track solo release “High-rise Skyline”. Since the beginning of 2017 James has performed well over 100 shows all around Australia and Europe supporting Bill.
In a world often starved of originality James Van Cooper is breathing a fresh take on Americana songwriting, all brought together by his starkly truthful and personal lyrics.
