Little Wise is the moniker of Melbourne Folk-Roots and Americana songwriter Sophie Klein. True to her name, this songbird is small in stature, yet shares her wisdom with adoring audiences through masterful storytelling and soul-baring lyrics.
‘Silver Birch’, the debut full-length album from Little Wise, was released in November 2016 and has been heralded as “sweetly emotive and unmistakably thoughtful” (Happy). This collection of exquisitely crafted songs explores Klein’s story in a deeply personal and honest way, telling of grief, relationships and self-discovery. Her conversational lyrics are reminiscent of classic country, emanating a respect and longing for the past, while a delicate blend of classic drumming and smooth atmospheric electric guitar and pedal steel reflect her own unique spin on the music that shaped her. Klein collaborated with production team MEJU (Megan Bernard and Kaliu Tonuma (Neil Finn, Crowded House, Hunters and Collectors) on the record which features special guest performances by Sal Kimber, Ben Franz (The Waifs), Rosie Burgess, Sam Lohs (Fruit) and other renowned players of the flourishing Melbourne folk scene.
The Little Wise live show is an uplifting, raw and energetic journey; with a refreshing set list blending the more intimate numbers with the rollicking Roots-Rock. With either her 1962 Gibson J-50 or her Danelectro in hand, Klein “sings with a joy that is totally apparent from her expression, from the lighting up of her eyes to the smile spreading across her face” (Out and About in Adelaide). Backing Little Wise onstage is her charismatic live band, featuring adored songwriter Rosie Burgess moonlighting on bass guitar, while Pam Zaharias brings her distinctive drumming to lift the music to even greater heights.
